The only firefox extension I consider indispensable (you do use firefox, dont you?) is Adblock Plus.
It will literally change the way you view the internet. It automatically updates itself to block ad images. If you do see an ad, just right click on it and select 'Adblock image..' and its gone forever... its kinda fun to do.
Another tip is to use "*" in place of the filename in the popup box when you right click an image.
For example : change 'http://www.ad.com/adimages/ad.gif'
to 'http://www.ad.com/adimages/*'
