Flower Photos 5-6-06

Here's some photos I took a few weeks ago just playing with my new camera.

this was taken at a community event 'dinner at the dump', near the auburn airport.

My Home-made Fountain

Just for fun, I made a fountain in my backyard. There was a pretty un-usable space near some trees next to some stairs leading up to a front door. Plants cant go there because the water run-off would kill the trees (black oaks are sensitive to root rot). Total cost of the project, $100. (just an unrelated side note: the picture of a fern that I use for the top banner of this blog was taken about 3 feet directly behind the photographer in these pictures).

This is the space I had to work with.

This is a photoshopped idea I came up with while brainstorming:
at this point, I wasn't sure if I wanted concrete or wood for the frame.

Here's a frame I made from some extra redwood boards. All I did was level the dirt. The box measures 34 inches on each side, which is just because all I had to work with were 4 boards measuring 70ish inches, allowing me to make 8 boards total for the 2 frames. The frames are not attached to each other or the ground, they are just resting in the dirt.

Not knowing what I really wanted, I went to Home Depot and found a kit with a liner, pump, and some other extras. This shows the liner installed with some water in it.

Here's a picture of the fountain attached to the pump. At this point, I wasn't really sure what I should do for the rocks in and around the pool.

I found some rocks in my backyard, and some from a local river. The rocks on the inside of the pool are from the river. I remembered an old working sluice box (to look for gold) a relative made several decades ago that was in my shed. It would be perfect for the fountain. I just propped it on a bucket to see what it would look like.

Here's the finished project (at least I hope its finished). The rock on the outside border is from my yard, the rock on the inside is from the river.
